High Season Will Bring Two New Airlines And More Flights From Existing Ones To Liberia Airport

Two airlines from North America will start offering flights to the Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport in Liberia and two others will expand their operations starting in November. The influx of North American travelers, the main tourist market of Costa Rica, is aligned with the beginning of the high season of the country.

US airlines Apple Vacations and Aeromexico will start operating here while Air Canada and Sunwing will bring more flights to the province.

“We have several airlines interested in opening new routes from new destinations in the medium term,” Rosa Rodriguez, an administrative assistant at Airports Worldwide, a shareholder in Coriport, the company that manages the airport, said in an email.

According to the ICT, US tourists accounted for 40% of international arrivals to Costa Rica in 2017, with 1.2 million visitors. More than 200,000 Canadians and 100,000 Mexicans visited the country during the same year.

The US-based airline Apple Vacations will offer daily charter flights from Rockford, Illinois, to Liberia between January 4, 2019 and April 5, 2019, the Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT) announced in June. Apple Vacations flights will add 2,340 seats available for travelers leaving North America.

Aeromexico, which already operates flights to San Jose, will bring new flights twice a week from Mexico City to Liberia between November 10 and April 21, 2019. Each flight will have a capacity of up to 99 passengers.

Hermes Navarro, Head of Attraction of Investments of the ICT, confirmed that the new operation of Apple Vacations with the airport is thanks to the demand generated by the North American tourist market, whose holiday periods between December and April coincide with the high season of Costa Rica .

“Certain important markets for Costa Rica tend to be considered seasonal since people limit travel mainly for work reasons,” the official said.

A charter flight is an exclusive service for a group of people who do not use commercial lines for different reasons.

“The charter operations have been extremely effective, facilitating connections and offers very favorable for this public, which is complemented by regular operations of flights to the country,” Navarro added.
The Canadian company Sunwing Airlines, which currently flies to Liberia, will offer new flights of 189 seats between Vancouver and Liberia from December 23 and until March 31, 2019.

For its part, Air Canada, which offers four flights per week between Toronto and Liberia, will fly every day from December 15. The airline’s weekly route from Montreal to Liberia will also increase to three per week from December 18 to April 2019. With this offer, they increase to 17,000 visitor spaces.

What will happen after the high season? Airports Worldwide expects that some of the airlines that will expand their business with the Liberia airport will continue after the peak season, depending on the demand and performance of the airlines.

Muni de Liberia has executed only 8% of revenues from airport taxes
Last year, Costa Rica received 1,780,550 tourists who arrived by plane, according to the ICT. Half of those travelers spent at least one night in Guanacaste, the only province slightly behind the Central Valley, which remains with 52.3% of the visitors who stay a night or more.

The beach: great attraction for tourists

Robin Polk is a tourist from Texas, USA. UU., Who has been vacationing in Guanacaste several times since 2012. Fly to Liberia with your preferred airline, Southwest Airlines, whose flights to Guanacaste seem affordable.

“We like the airport because it is smaller and the people are very friendly,” Polk told La Voz de Guanacaste. His family travels to Garza several times a year to fish.

According to the ICT, like Polk, most tourists travel to Costa Rica to go to the beach. His second favorite activity is ecotourism. The average tourist stays in Costa Rica for 12 days, spending about $ 1,561.40 during their trip.

Muni de Liberia executes only 34% of infrastructure works proposed each year.
