Liberia Airport Will Serve 300,000 More Passengers Per Year After Expansion
Recent improvements at the Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport in Liberia will allow it to serve 300,000 more passengers per year.
From this Saturday, the terminal has an additional 4,118 square meters in its boarding rooms, six new counters for airlines (counters), 417 m² in its main hall and a new carousel in the baggage reception area.
The expansion of the works was in charge of the Inter-American Investment Corporation (Coriport), a concessionaire and was inaugurated by President Carlos Alvarado Quesada and the Minister of Tourism, María Amalia Revelo, during a tour maintained by Alvarado Guanacaste.
“We recognize tourism as an engine of the national economy and its multiplier effect to improve the quality of life of thousands of Costa Ricans,” said Alvarado.
According to María Amalia Revelo, Minister of Tourism, since May the arrival of four new international flights to said terminal has been announced.
“We are joining efforts to diversify the market for flights to Liberia, an objective in which we have been working continuously with the concessionaire and the Guanacaste Chamber of Tourism. The United States continues to be the main source of tourists to Costa Rica with a potential market of 24 million people, “said Revelo.
The general manager of Coriport, César Jaramillo, said that the growth of the airport directly benefits the province of Guanacaste.
“As a concessionaire we are committed to constant and proactive improvements that guarantee the passenger a unique experience, both in the arrival and departure of the country,” said Jaramillo.
Airlines with new flights
Also airlines Aeromexico, Sunwing and United will offer new flights to the airport of Liberia, permanently or temporarily, while Air Canada will increase the frequency of its services.
The Aeroméxico service between Mexico and the Liberia terminal will be the first flight from Guanacaste to a country other than the United States and Canada.
This airline will travel from November 10 to April 21, 2019 with a frequency of two weekly flights on Embraer 190 aircraft, which have a capacity for 99 passengers.
In the case of Sunwing, it will fly to Liberia from December 23 of this year until March 31, so it will offer a direct route from Vancouver, Canada for the first time. In December, the airline Air Canada will increase the frequency of its flights from Montreal and Toronto.
The operation of the flights from Toronto will rise four times a week to a daily frequency from December 15, 2018, while the Montreal-Liberia route will pass from one to three weekly flights from December 18 next.
The new works represent an investment of $ 10.3 million by Coriport. The implementation of the diplomatic room, the remodeling of the logistics center and the solid waste area are also expected.
Since 2016, the Liberian airport receives more than one million passengers a year, thanks to the arrival of 12 airlines with an average of 30 international flights per day.
In 2017, 525,661 international arrivals were registered in Costa Rica at the Daniel Oduber airport; 74.7% came from the United States.
From January to May, 287,355 arrivals have been registered, according to data from the General Directorate of Migration and Immigration.
